MAGPUL was founded by former United States Marine Richard Fitzpatrick in 1999. Since then, they have made a name for themselves by producing quality shooting accessories. Their first products were called MAGPULs, which made pulling a magazine out of a pouch faster and easier. Today, they have broadened into tons of AR-15 accessories, 10/22 accessories, and now even the Remington 700 and Ruger American platforms.
The Magpul Hunter 700 is available in both short and long action models with left or right configurations available as well. The beating heart of this chassis system is the cast V-style bedding block and enlarged area for your aftermarket recoil lugs. MAGPUL also offers an AICS bottom metal for a reasonable value. Coming from the ADL model with an internal magazine I thought it was well worth the added expense.
One of the best things about the MAGPUL Hunter is the price. A bare stock comes in at just over $200 and when you outfit it with a bottom metal and PMAGs you are just over $300. There may be many other ways to upgrade your factory Remington, but this chassis seems to have a lot of features for such an inexpensive option. Consistency is accuracy!
My testing rifle was a “Remington 700 ADL Tactical” chambered in .308 Winchester with a 20” threaded barrel. PHEW. Out of this box the rifle was shooting just under 2MOA out to 200 yards (3.5-4 inches).
When I put this rifle together I was astounded at the difference. Yes it was much heavier than with the cheap injection molded factory stock, but not uncomfortably so.
I picked up a cheap MLOK bipod kit on amazon and away I went. Due to the large amount of free float allowed by the Hunter 700 my bull barrel had plenty of room to resonate however it felt the need. All the extra stability coupled with my new Triggertech Trigger and Vortex Diamondback Tactical scope my new rifle build was shooting well under 1MOA. I may not be able to shoot this rifle at it’s limit, but it performs very well for any use I could ever to throw at it.
Upgrading from my factory Remington 700 ADL Tactical was smooth as butter.
I also thought this would be an ideal time to install the TriggerTech Primary Trigger. More on that process here. I adjusted the trigger before installing the barreled action into the chassis. You can do it in the chassis, just can’t swing the wrench as far.
Installing the chassis only takes a few minutes and a few basic hand tools. The first step to remove your barreled action from your current stock using the screws on the bottom of your factory stock. Mine had an internal magazine so I had to remove a screw to take that off as well. Place your barreled action in the new MAGPUL Hunter system and replace the bolts.
I used my Wheeler Fat Wrench to torque everything to the MAGPUL recommendation. Everything lined up beautifully and felt very solid. As far as torque settings go, MAGPUL says 55 in/lb. Every rifle likes something different. Start around 45 and increase in 5 in/lb increments and see where the rifle groups best. I have seen some people go over 60 in/lb because that’s what their rifle likes.
There are mounting areas for your QD cups in the back and 2 dimples for sling studs on the front.
To adjust the length of pull, there is a screw in the rear of the stock that releases the length of pull spacers as well as the cheek riser. You want to adjust the length of pull so that when your elbow is at 90 degrees your hand wraps nicely around the grip and the shoulder pad should fit snugly into your elbow. Add or remove spacers for proper fitment. The cheek riser coupled with proper height scope rings takes a lot of strain off of your neck from not having to muscle your head into position after every shot. Consistency is the key to accuracy.
The ergonomics of this stock are excellent. The flat bottom of the fore end is great for shooting off of a bag, while the shape of it around the bottom of the barrel works well for standing as well as shooting off of a knee. The grip is textured enough to give a good grip without being abrasive.
